I’VE BEEN HELPING PEOPLE FOR YEARS.

I have a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of London with post-doctoral study in computer and cognitive science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

I have taught at the University of London, Columbia University, Boston University, SUNY-Buffalo, CUNY-Graduate Center, University of Maryland and government training centers, and lectured internationally to both lay and technical audiences. A published author of over a hundred technical and general articles, I also teach music, sing in a choir, and volunteer at hospitals.

IN THE END, CAREER ADVISING FOUND ME.

My colleagues began to seek me out for career advice, and my experience and connections helped them make changes for the better. I expanded beyond my network of colleagues, offering my services to people at all stages of life. For example, I have worked with early launchers just out of college and I have helped mid-career professionals change jobs or careers, sometimes through simple need for change but often from a painful lay-off. I have advised those with work gaps who have taken time off to pursue other interests but who now want to re-enter the workplace.

I have also advised the over-55 who have retired early or who want to make a new start (one of my clients even started a new endeavor at 72, never too late!) I have particular experience in working with foreign students who are navigating the US educational system, and facing new challenges. Together, we collaboratively explore options, use past experiences and skills to each person’s advantage, and follow goals. We develop strong resumes and a meaningful digital presence to highlight each person’s strengths and work together on interviewing techniques. I have worked with those challenged by avoidance, procrastination, ADHD and other different cognitive styles to get organized and stick to the plan you want to follow.

CREDENTIALS

You might be wondering how a Ph.D. in Linguistics is relevant to career advising.

I've been on the Internet as a computational linguist - both studying and developing it - since 1979. Some career counselors only know the tip of the iceberg when it comes to searching jobs online - I actually developed many of these search and filtering algorithms now used on online job boards. Furthermore, I know how much the words you use truly matter. I know how to make sure your written material passes through filtering technologies that drive job search. I can guide you through the different types of Applicant Tracking Systems (ATSs).

I will prepare you for the Video interview (Skype or Zoom) and help you to navigate systems that profile you and your personality from your social media. How you present and the language you use can define you in very subtle but important ways. I’ll help you tailor your profile to give you the edge that you need in the digital marketplace, in the interview process, and in your negotiations for the position you want at the salary you deserve
